PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate)

Also: PCC, precipitated calcium carbonate

A synthesized calcium carbonate, chemically identical to GCC but with controlled particle size and shape. Used where optical performance matters.

PCC is made by reacting calcium oxide with carbon dioxide in a controlled process, producing particles of uniform size and shape (scalenohedral or rhombohedral). It gives higher brightness and more controlled opacity than GCC at equal loading.

PCC is more expensive than GCC but delivers better optical performance. Premium coated papers and some printing grades use PCC for this reason. Many mills blend GCC and PCC in different ratios.
