Grammage

Also: grammage, basis weight metric

The international unit for paper weight, measured in grams per square metre (g/m²). Also called GSM.

Grammage is the standard unit for paper weight worldwide outside the US. It reports the mass of paper in grams per square metre of surface. Grammage and GSM are synonyms.

The equivalent North American unit is basis weight, which reports mass in pounds per ream (500 sheets) of a grade-specific reference size. Grammage is simpler because it is the same for every grade.
